A Laboratory for Marine Recovery
The Columbretes Islands are the emergent peaks of a large volcanic field, located 49 kilometers off the Spanish coast. The main island, Illa Grossa, is the remnant of a collapsed volcanic crater, forming a distinctive semi-circular shape. This geological structure creates a sheltered environment, both above and below the water. The volcanic activity that formed the islands occurred in four episodes between 0.3 and 1.0 million years ago. The archipelago consists of four main groups of islets: Illa Grossa, La Ferrera, La Foradada, and El Carallot, with a total land area of only 0.19 square kilometers.
Established as a marine reserve in 1990, the waters around the islands are a powerful example of ecosystem restoration. Studies have documented a significant "reserve effect," where the prohibition of fishing allows marine life to rebound. The biomass of the fish community inside the protected zone is substantially higher than in adjacent fished areas. This recovery extends to commercially valuable species like the spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas). Research shows that young lobsters migrate from the reserve to surrounding fishing grounds, providing a net benefit to the local fishery. The underwater landscape is characterized by rocky bottoms and coralligenous communities, dominated by species like the red gorgonian (Paramuricea clavata). The clear waters also support rare algae, including Laminaria rodriguezii, which is typically found at much greater depths.
A Refuge Above the Waves
The isolation of the Columbretes Islands has supported unique terrestrial life. The islands host an endemic subspecies of the Iberian wall lizard, Podarcis liolepis atratus. Several plants are also found only here, such as the Columbretes sea cress (Lobularia maritima columbretensis).
The archipelago is a designated Special Protection Area for birds and a critical stopover for species migrating between Europe and Africa. It hosts one of the world's most important breeding colonies of the Audouin's gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii), a species that was considered one of the rarest gulls in the 1980s. The islands also provide nesting sites for Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) and Scopoli's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea). In 2024, the wider Valencian Community recorded over 5,300 pairs of Audouin's gulls, evidence of conservation efforts that began on these remote islets.
