A Landscape of Extremes
The Ses Salines salt flats began as a strategic resource for the Phoenicians and Carthaginians around 600 BCE. These early civilizations recognized the ideal conditions for salt harvesting: shallow lagoons, low rainfall, and intense summer sun. The Romans later expanded these operations, engineering a sophisticated network of channels and ponds to manage the flow of seawater. This system allows seawater to move through a series of shallow evaporation ponds. As the Mediterranean sun and wind evaporate the water, its salinity increases dramatically from the standard 3.5% up to levels exceeding 30%. This concentration forces sodium chloride to crystallize, creating layers of pure sea salt. The bright pink and reddish colors of the salt pans come from life, not pollution. These hues are caused by microscopic organisms that thrive in the hypersaline water. The archaea is Halobacterium salinarum, which contains a light-sensitive pigment called bacteriorhodopsin. This pigment allows the microbe to perform a unique type of photosynthesis. Another contributor is the micro-algae Dunaliella salina, which produces vast quantities of beta-carotene under the stress of high salt and intense sunlight, giving it a pinkish-red color. This extreme environment is also one of the few places where the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, can flourish.
Ecological and Archaeological Significance
The same hypersaline conditions that produce salt also act as a powerful preservative. The high concentration of salt draws water out of organic materials via osmosis, which inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi responsible for decay. This process has preserved ancient wooden structures, including sluice gates from the Roman era, for over two millennia.
The area is part of the Ses Salines Natural Park, a protected area of approximately 3,000 terrestrial hectares and 13,000 marine hectares. This park is a stopover and nesting site for over 210 species of migratory birds. Between August and October, hundreds of Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) arrive to winter in the pans, feeding on the abundant brine shrimp. Other resident and migratory birds include the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), and the Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus). The park's marine component is equally important, containing large meadows of Posidonia oceanica seagrass, a UNESCO World Heritage site that oxygenates the water and supports a diverse marine community of 220 different species.
