A Precarious Refuge
The Chafarinas Islands, a small group of Spanish-controlled rocky islets 3.3 kilometers off the coast of Morocco, is a habitat for one of the world's most endangered marine mammals: the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus). Historically, these seals ranged across the entire Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the Atlantic coast of northwest Africa, resting and giving birth on open beaches. Centuries of human pressure have driven the remaining seals to seek refuge in inaccessible sea caves for pupping and rest, making these remote, military-controlled islands an accidental sanctuary.
The seals here are part of a larger, fragile population centered on the Cabo Blanco peninsula, roughly 4,000 km away on the coast of Mauritania and Western Sahara. The Chafarinas group is a small, peripheral nucleus. Adult males of this species (Monachus monachus) are typically black with a white belly patch and weigh up to 320 kg, while females are smaller and dark grey or brown. Pups are born with a woolly black coat, called a lanugo, which they shed after about six to eight weeks. The total global population is estimated to be fewer than 700 individuals, scattered in isolated groups.
The Genetic Bottleneck
The Chafarinas colony's extreme isolation has led to a severe genetic problem. With a tiny founding population and little to no genetic exchange with other groups, the seals are now dangerously inbred. Studies have revealed that the species has extremely low levels of genetic diversity overall, but the situation here is particularly acute. The lack of genetic variation means a higher risk of congenital defects and a reduced ability for the population to adapt to diseases or environmental changes. This genetic plight comes from population fragmentation, a threat to the species' long-term survival.
Conservation efforts, led by organizations like the CBD-Habitat Foundation, focus on monitoring this population through techniques such as photo-identification. The unique white patch on the belly of pups and other markings can help researchers track individual seals without invasive tagging. Protecting the breeding caves from human disturbance is necessary. Researchers hope that by safeguarding these last refuges, the population might stabilize and eventually expand, allowing for gene flow between the few remaining colonies and pulling the species back from the edge of extinction.
