The Plastic Sea's Toxic Runoff
The Albuferas de Adra is a small coastal wetland reserve, a wildlife oasis surrounded by the intensive agriculture of Almería. This region hosts the largest concentration of greenhouses on Earth, a sprawling complex often called the "Mar de Plástico," or "Sea of Plastic." Runoff from this vast agricultural zone drains directly into the wetlands, carrying a persistent load of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Scientific analysis of the water and sediments in the Adra lagoons reveals elevated concentrations of several heavy metals. The most prominent of these are cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu). Unlike organic pollutants, these elemental metals do not break down over time. Instead, they settle into the sediment, creating a long-term contamination problem that works its way into the ecosystem. Cadmium is particularly notable for its high toxicity, even at very low concentrations. These metals originate from impurities in phosphate fertilizers and from certain pesticides applied within the greenhouses.
Botanical Metal Sponges
The wetlands have a natural, if unintended, cleanup crew. Plants like the common reed (Phragmites australis) and cattails (Typha domingensis) are hyperaccumulators of heavy metals. These plants absorb the dissolved metals from the water and sediment through their root systems. The metals are then translocated and stored within the plant's tissues: roots, stems, and leaves.
This process, known as bioaccumulation, is remarkably efficient. Studies on Phragmites australis show it can actively uptake and store a range of heavy metals. Plant tissue analysis from sites like Adra shows that these species can concentrate metals inside their cells at levels up to 1,000 times higher than the background concentrations found in the surrounding soil and water. The plants act as living filters, pulling the toxic metals out of the aquatic environment and locking them away in their biomass.
While this phytoremediation capability is sometimes harnessed for environmental cleanup, its spontaneous occurrence here has complex consequences. The metals are removed from the water, but they are now concentrated in a primary food source. When the plants die and decompose, some of these metals can be re-released into the sediment. The metal-laden plants introduce the contaminants into the local food web. Herbivorous insects and other invertebrates consume the plant tissues, and they are in turn eaten by fish, amphibians, and birds, passing the toxins up the food chain. This biomagnification can lead to dangerous concentrations in apex predators. The Albuferas de Adra is a designated Special Protection Area for birds and hosts over 140 species, including the endangered white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), making the contamination a conservation concern.
