A City Built on Volcanic Glass
Nine thousand years ago, on the plains of central Anatolia, a community of 3,500 to 8,000 people lived in a dense, honeycomb-like settlement of mudbrick houses. This proto-city, known as Çatalhöyük, had no streets; residents entered their homes through openings in the roof, traversing the settlement by walking across the rooftops. The lifeblood of this unique Neolithic society was a sharp, black volcanic glass called obsidian, and it came from more than 190 kilometers away.
Obsidian was the primary material for the chipped-stone tools used at Çatalhöyük. This naturally occurring glass forms when lava cools too quickly for crystals to grow. When fractured, it creates an edge that can be just 3 nanometers thick—hundreds of times sharper than a modern surgical scalpel. This extreme sharpness made it an ideal material for everything from blades and spearheads for hunting to scrapers for processing food and animal hides. Yet, there were no local sources. The people of Çatalhöyük established and maintained long-distance connections to acquire this essential material.
Geochemical Fingerprinting
Modern science allows archaeologists to pinpoint the exact origin of the obsidian found at Çatalhöyük. Techniques like Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) are geochemical fingerprinting methods. By bombarding a small, non-destructive sample with neutrons or X-rays, scientists can determine the precise concentrations of trace elements like zirconium, barium, and scandium. Each volcanic source has a unique chemical signature. The analyses show that the vast majority of Çatalhöyük's obsidian came from two specific sources in Cappadocia: Göllü Dağ and Nenezi Dağ.
This created a 9,000-year-old supply chain that stretched nearly 200 kilometers across the Anatolian plateau. With no pack animals or wheeled transport, the obsidian was likely moved through a network of down-the-line trade, passed from one community to the next, or carried on foot by dedicated procurement groups. At Çatalhöyük, this imported glass wasn't just for utilitarian tools. Craftspeople also produced rare and valuable items, including some of the world's first mirrors. These objects, painstakingly ground and polished, were often placed in burials, suggesting they held deep social and ritual value. The constant flow of obsidian from distant volcanoes was fundamental to the material, social, and symbolic life of this remarkable early city.
