A Landscape Forged in Fire
The story of the fairy chimneys, or "peribacaları" as they are locally known, begins between 3 and 9 million years ago, during the late Miocene to Pliocene epochs. A chain of volcanoes, including Mount Erciyes (3,917 meters), Mount Hasan (3,253 meters), and Göllü Dağ, violently erupted across the Central Anatolia plateau. These were not gentle lava flows; they were explosive events that blanketed an area of 20,000 square kilometers with immense quantities of volcanic ash and pumice.
Over millions of years, these deposits compacted under their own weight to form a thick, porous rock called tuff. The plateau isn't made of a single, uniform substance. Subsequent, different volcanic events layered harder, denser rock like basalt and andesite on top of the soft tuff. This layering is the fundamental architectural blueprint for the fairy chimneys. The initial tuff deposits created a massive plateau, in some places reaching a thickness of over 100 meters.
Nature's Sculpting Tools
Once the volcanic activity subsided, the forces of erosion began to shape the landscape. Water is the primary sculptor in Cappadocia. Rain and melting snow carved deep channels and valleys into the soft tuff plateau. The element in the formation of the chimneys is the hard, resistant caprock. This layer of basalt protects the column of softer tuff directly beneath it from the erosive power of the rain.
The surrounding, unprotected tuff is steadily worn away by water and, to a lesser extent, wind. This process of differential erosion—where soft rock erodes faster than hard rock—leaves behind the famous cone-shaped pillars. Some of these natural towers reach heights of up to 40 meters (130 feet). The process is continuous and ongoing; eventually, the protective caprock will fall, and the exposed tuff cone will erode completely. The varied mineral content of the different volcanic layers gives the formations their distinctive colors, ranging from pink and yellow to white. The rock's softness also allowed humans to leave a record. For millennia, people have carved dwellings, churches, and entire subterranean cities directly into the tuff.
