The Ghost Cats of the Steppe
The Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) once roamed from the Arabian Peninsula to India, a predator of the open plains. While its final holdout is now a tiny, critically endangered population in Iran, few people realize this subspecies survived in Turkey into the latter half of the 20th century. Historical records place the last cheetahs in the semi-arid steppes and open lands of Central and Southeastern Anatolia.
These cheetahs were apex predators adapted to the region's specific environment. Their diet consisted mainly of medium-sized herbivores like the goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) and wild sheep, which they hunted in high-speed pursuits across the plains. For centuries, they were a known, if elusive, part of the landscape. Ottoman sultans and other nobility even kept tamed cheetahs, using them as hunting companions to chase down antelope—a practice that showed both wealth and power.
The final decline of the Anatolian cheetah was swift. The combined pressures of the modern era proved insurmountable. Widespread agriculture converted their open hunting grounds into farmland. Road construction and urban expansion fragmented the vast territories they required, isolating small groups from one another. This habitat loss, compounded by the overhunting of their primary gazelle prey, pushed the cheetah population below a sustainable threshold.
A Unique Genetic Legacy, Lost
The extinction of Anatolia's cheetahs was a regional loss and the disappearance of a unique genetic branch of the species. Research on museum specimens—the last physical evidence of these animals—revealed their distinctiveness. DNA extracted from these preserved individuals showed a significant genetic differentiation from the cheetahs in neighboring Iran.
This finding suggests the Anatolian population was isolated for a considerable period, developing its own genetic signature. The divergence between Asiatic and African cheetahs is estimated to have occurred between 32,000 and 67,000 years ago. The Anatolian cats represented a specific lineage within that Asiatic group, a branch of the cheetah family tree that is now permanently gone.
The process that doomed them is an extinction vortex. As their habitat shrank, the cheetah population became fragmented into small, isolated pockets. Unable to interbreed, these groups suffered from a loss of genetic diversity, making them more vulnerable to disease and environmental changes. With fewer than 50 individuals thought to remain in the entire Asiatic subspecies (all in Iran), the loss of the genetically distinct Anatolian population is a significant blow to the cheetah's global heritage.
