An Ocean of Oil
The province of Jaén is the undisputed global capital of olive oil. An estimated 66 million olive trees (Olea europaea) cover 550,000 hectares, creating an area often called the "sea of olives". This immense monoculture produces nearly 25% of the world's entire supply of olive oil, more than the entire country of Italy. The dominant cultivar is Picual, a variety favored for its high yield and stable oil. This massive agricultural enterprise is a recent phenomenon. While olive cultivation in the region dates back to Roman times, the most significant expansion occurred in the 20th century. In 1960, olive groves in Jaén covered 380,000 hectares; today that figure is nearly 600,000 hectares. This intensification turned the province into an economic powerhouse, but it has a substantial ecological cost.
The Ecological Ledger
The uniformity of the olive sea has led to a dramatic simplification of the ecosystem. The industrial cultivation methods, characterized by the elimination of ground cover, frequent tilling, and high inputs of agrochemicals—create an environment hostile to most native species. The intensification of olive farming has been identified as a direct cause of biodiversity loss, diminishing the number and variety of animal and plant species. Regenerative agriculture projects have shown that where native plants are allowed to grow between the trees, bird populations can increase by 10% and bee populations by 47% in just three years.
Soil erosion is one of the most severe consequences. The lack of vegetation cover between the olive trees leaves the soil exposed. Average soil loss in Jaén's olive groves has been measured at rates that far exceed natural regeneration. Some estimates place the average erosion at 31 tons per hectare per year, with certain areas experiencing losses as high as 80 tons per hectare annually. This persistent soil loss degrades the land's fertility and leads to the desertification process in Andalusia. The expansion of irrigated olive groves, which now cover over 400,000 hectares in Andalusia, places significant stress on regional water resources and contributes to non-point source pollution from fertilizer and herbicide runoff.
