Leakey's American controversy
In 1963, the world-famous paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey, famous for his discoveries at Olduvai Gorge in Africa, turned his attention to a site in California's Mojave Desert. Local archaeologist Ruth DeEtte Simpson had shown him oddly fractured stones of chalcedony, chert, and jasper from the Calico Hills. Leakey became convinced they were human-made tools. With funding from the National Geographic Society, formal excavations began in 1964. The project aimed to prove a human presence in the Americas far earlier than the widely accepted timeline, which centered around 12,000 to 14,000 years ago. The site itself is a Pleistocene alluvial fan, a massive wedge of debris deposited by water and mudflows from the surrounding hills on the edge of the ancient Lake Manix.
Artifacts or geofacts?
Excavations, especially in the main "Leakey Pit," unearthed tens of thousands of potential stone tools. The main finding came from dating methods applied to the site. Uranium-thorium dating of the calcite crusts on some specimens yielded an astonishing age of around 200,000 years. This date, if correct, would have radically rewritten the history of human migration. However, from the beginning, many scientists were skeptical. Geologist C. Vance Haynes argued that the rocks were not artifacts but "geofacts"—stones shaped by natural geological processes. The alluvial fan environment is a high-energy system where violent debris flows could cause rocks to smash against one another, looking like intentional human flaking. The sheer number of supposed tools, over 60,000 from the main pits, and the total lack of associated human fossils or living hearths, further weakened the case for human occupation. The overwhelming scientific consensus today is that the Calico stones are naturally formed geofacts. Despite this, the debate forced archaeologists to develop more rigorous criteria for identifying and validating early human sites.
