A Snapshot from the Stone Age
Half a million years ago, the landscape of West Sussex was a coastal plain bordering a channel that separated Britain from mainland Europe. An ancient, now-buried chalk cliff stood near a shoreline where early humans gathered. The site, discovered in a quarry in 1974, preserves this environment with exceptional clarity. The layers of sediment contain a detailed record of life during the Middle Pleistocene, around 480,000 years ago.
The most significant finds are the fossil remains of an early human, dubbed "Boxgrove Man." Discovered in 1993, a partial tibia (shin bone) and later two incisor teeth are the oldest human remains ever found in Great Britain. These fossils are attributed to the species Homo heidelbergensis. The tibia belonged to a robust adult, estimated to have been 1.8 meters tall and weighing around 80 kilograms. Analysis of the teeth shows scratch marks, likely made when using stone tools to cut food held in the mouth. These remains provide direct evidence of the hominins who inhabited this ancient landscape.
The site also contains many animal fossils, including remains of extinct rhinoceros (Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis), giant deer (Praemegaceros verticornis), horses (Equus mosbachensis), and bears (Ursus deningeri). Many of these bones show butchery marks. At one specific location, the "Horse Butchery Site," remains of a large horse are surrounded by the flint tools used to process its carcass. The bones were cracked open, likely to extract marrow.
An Acheulean Toolkit
Hundreds of stone tools have been recovered from Boxgrove, many in pristine condition. These artifacts are primarily Acheulean handaxes, a type of tool characterized by its oval or pear shape. The Boxgrove axes are considered some of the most finely worked examples ever found, remarkable for their thinness and symmetry.
The toolmakers used local flint nodules from the nearby chalk cliffs. Scatters of flint debris around animal skeletons show that they often made and sharpened their tools on the spot. Wear analysis on the handaxes confirms they were used for butchering animals. Besides stone tools, the Boxgrove people also used bone. Bones from elephants and rhinos were shaped into "soft hammers" or batons, used for the final, precise shaping of the flint handaxes. This use of bone as a raw material for toolmaking shows an understanding of different materials. One elephant bone hammer, identified from a fragment excavated in the 1990s, is among the earliest bone tools known from Europe.
