The science of the mud
The Boryeong mud flats, known locally as "getbol," are a complex geological and biological system. Formed over thousands of years from nutrient-rich sediments deposited by rivers meeting the Yellow Sea, the mud is exceptionally fine-grained. This geologic history has resulted in a high concentration of specific minerals, including bentonite and germanium, as well as silica, magnesium, and zinc oxide. Scientific analysis has identified at least 19 different mineral components.
Beyond its mineral content, the mud has much organic matter. This includes humic substances like humic acid and fulvic acid, which are decomposition products of plant and animal life. Studies have shown that these organic compounds, particularly humic acid, have high water-retention properties. The constant mixing of fresh and salt water creates an environment where specific algae and plankton thrive, further adding vitamins to the mud and amino acids. This entire mixture undergoes a slow, natural fermentation process within the tidal flat, developing its chemical and biological profile.
From folk remedy to clinical data
For generations, the local population has used the mud for skin remedies. Modern scientific inquiry has begun to validate these traditional uses. Laboratory studies on human keratinocytes (skin cells) have investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of Boryeong mud extracts. A water-based extract of the mud was found to significantly inhibit the production of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a compound involved in inflammation, when the cells were exposed to UVB radiation.
Further analysis revealed that the mineral components of the mud were largely responsible for this effect, with an 83% reduction in PGE2 production at a concentration of 200 parts per million. This anti-inflammatory action is comparable to that of indomethacin, a standard anti-inflammatory drug. The antimicrobial and sterilization effects of the mud have also been noted, which explains its use in trauma therapy. These findings provide a scientific basis for the mud's reputation and have led to its development as a primary ingredient in a wide range of cosmetic products, from facial masks to shampoos. The local mud cosmetics industry was, in fact, the original motivation for the creation of the Boryeong Mud Festival in 1998 as a marketing initiative.
