A Plant Without Parts
High in the cloud forests of Luzon, a bizarre organism emerges from the leaf litter, looking more like a fungus than a flower. This is Balanophora reflexa, a member of a strange genus of parasitic plants. It is a holoparasite, meaning it completely depends on a host plant for survival. Having abandoned photosynthesis over 100 million years ago, it lacks chlorophyll, true leaves, stems, and roots. Instead, it develops an underground, tuber-like structure that fuses directly with the roots of its host—often trees in the Urticaceae (nettle) and Fagaceae (beech) families.
This tuber is the primary vegetative body of the plant. From this connection, the parasite siphons all the water and nutrients it needs to live. The plant spends most of its life entirely underground as a tuber, only becoming visible when it sends up its peculiar, fleshy inflorescences from the forest floor. Genetic analysis shows the extent of this parasitic adaptation: Balanophora has shed nearly a third of the genes found in typical photosynthetic plants, resulting in an streamlined genome.
The Fox-Scented Flower
The structures that appear above ground are the plant's flowering bodies, which are often yellow or red. The name Balanophora reflexa refers to the male flowers, which have perianth lobes that are strongly reflexed, or bent backward, at anthesis. The plant is dioecious, with separate male and female individuals. One aspect of its reproductive strategy is its scent. The inflorescences of Balanophora reflexa are emit an odor like a fox, particularly in the morning. This smell is believed to attract its primary pollinators: flies (Diptera) and possibly wasps (Hymenoptera).
The female flowers are incredibly small and numerous; a single inflorescence can contain over one million individual flowers. Once pollinated, they produce some of the smallest and lightest seeds in the plant kingdom, each weighing as little as 7 micrograms. This dust-like seed is easily dispersed, though the exact mechanism remains a subject of study. In some parts of Asia, tubers from related Balanophora species are harvested for folk medicine or for their high concentration of a wax-like substance, which can be used as fuel for torches.
