The ghost in the tree
In the dense Atlantic Forest, a plant exists in a way that challenges the definition of a plant. Apodanthes caseariae is an extreme parasite, a holoparasite, meaning it derives all of its nutrients from a host. It has no leaves, no stem, and no roots of its own. For most of its life, it is invisible, living as a network of fungus-like filaments or even individual cells inside the branches and stems of its host trees. This internal, vegetative body is called an endophyte. Histological studies show these parasitic cells positioned to draw nutrients directly from the host's vascular tissues.
This organism belongs to the family Apodanthaceae, a small group of endoparasites found worldwide. Genetic analysis has placed this family within the order Cucurbitales, which also includes cucumbers and melons. Apodanthes caseariae is specialized, primarily infecting trees of the genus Casearia (family Salicaceae). The relationship is completely one-sided; the parasite is so effective that it can prevent the host tree's branches from flowering. The plant's own body is so reduced that its chloroplast genome—the set of genes for photosynthesis—is a tiny, non-functional relic of its evolution.
A sudden, tiny eruption
The only time Apodanthes caseariae appears is when it reproduces. The scattered parasitic cells inside the host aggregate and form a floral bud, which erupts directly from the host's bark. These flowers often appear in rows or clusters. What emerges is a tiny, unisexual flower, typically only 4 to 6 millimeters in diameter, with white or yellowish petals and yellow-to-orange bracts. The plants are dioecious, meaning individual flowers are either male or female.
Pollination is carried out by small insects. Bees, wasps, flies, and butterflies have all been observed visiting the flowers. Some evidence, such as heavy secretions from the flowers, suggests that ants may also play a role in pollination and seed dispersal. After pollination, the female flowers develop into small, fleshy berries, about 4 to 10 millimeters wide, containing numerous tiny seeds embedded in a sticky pulp. Birds are thought to be the primary dispersers, eating the fruit and spreading the seeds to new potential host trees. When a seed lands on a suitable Casearia tree, the mysterious process of infection begins, and the plant once again vanishes, becoming a ghost in the tree.
