A Paleolithic kill site
In a shallow valley in Soria, Spain, lies a 400,000-year-old mystery. The Ambrona archaeological site contains an enormous concentration of bones from the Middle Pleistocene, dominated by the remains of at least 30 straight-tusked elephants (Palaeoloxodon antiquus). Scattered among the elephant bones are the stone tools of an extinct human species, Homo heidelbergensis. While no hominin fossils were found at Ambrona itself, the tool technology and age of the site correspond with H. heidelbergensis finds elsewhere in Spain, such as Atapuerca.
The bone beds are located in what was once a swampy, lacustrine environment. Analysis of the fossils shows a clear pattern: the bones are disarticulated, and many bear the tell-tale signs of human activity, including cut marks from stone tools and percussion fractures from hammerstones. This indicates systematic butchery. The hominins at Ambrona were processing meat; they were selectively taking the most nutritious parts of the massive elephant carcasses. The stone tool assemblage belongs to the Acheulean industry, characterized by large, bifacial hand-axes and cleavers made from quartzite and chert.
The sheer number of elephants, coupled with the evidence of butchery, suggests this was not a random series of events. The current interpretation is that Homo heidelbergensis used the natural environment to their advantage. They likely drove entire herds of elephants into the muddy swamps, where the huge animals would become trapped and easier to kill. This strategy is one of the earliest known examples of coordinated, large-scale hunting by any human species.
A decades-long debate
The interpretation of Ambrona has been a subject of scientific debate for over half a century. The site was first excavated systematically between 1961 and 1963 by a team led by American paleoanthropologist F. Clark Howell. Howell's team concluded that Ambrona and the nearby, similar site of Torralba were kill sites where hominins actively hunted elephants. This view painted a picture of early humans as sophisticated, cooperative hunters.
This interpretation was challenged in the 1980s by archaeologist Lewis Binford. He argued that natural processes, like water flow, could have concentrated the bones and that the hominins were likely just scavenging from animals that died of natural causes. Binford suggested that early humans were marginal scavengers, not mighty hunters. This sparked a major controversy that pushed archaeologists to develop more rigorous methods for analyzing site formation and bone modification.
More recent excavations, starting in the 1990s, have provided new evidence that swings the consensus back toward the hunting hypothesis. While natural processes played a role in the site's formation, the cut marks, fracture patterns, and sheer density of butchered animals are difficult to explain by scavenging alone. The evidence strongly indicates that Homo heidelbergensis had an organized approach to acquiring meat and possessed the cognitive ability to plan and execute complex group activities.
