The Philosopher of the Arabs
In the 9th century, Baghdad was the intellectual center of the world. At its center was the Bayt al-Hikma, or House of Wisdom, a library and research institute established by the Abbasid Caliphs. Scholars from across the known world gathered here to translate and study texts on mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy. One of these scholars was Abu Yusuf Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi, a polymath born around 801 CE.
Al-Kindi was a member of the Arab tribe of Kinda and became known as the "philosopher of the Arabs." He was appointed by Caliph al-Ma'mun to the House of Wisdom, where he oversaw the translation of Greek philosophical and scientific works into Arabic. His personal output was immense, with at least 260 books on subjects ranging from metaphysics and ethics to optics, medicine, and music theory. In mathematics, he helped popularize the Indian numeral system in the Islamic world. In optics, his work influenced later European scientists like Roger Bacon. But it was his work on secret messages that produced a lasting breakthrough.
A Manuscript on Deciphering
Al-Kindi authored a book with a direct title: Risāla fī Istikhrāj al-Mu‘ammā, or A Manuscript on Deciphering Cryptographic Messages. In this text, he laid out the first known description of cryptanalysis, the science of breaking codes. The primary method of encryption at the time was the simple substitution cipher, where each letter of a message is consistently replaced by another letter or symbol. For centuries, this was a reasonably secure way to protect information.
Al-Kindi's insight was to apply statistical analysis. He observed that in any language, certain letters appear more frequently than others. For example, in English the letter 'E' is the most common, while 'Z' is among the least common. Al-Kindi realized this pattern was the answer. His method, now called frequency analysis, was simple but effective. First, an analyst takes a long piece of normal text in the same language as the secret message and counts the frequency of every letter. This establishes a baseline profile for the language. Next, the analyst counts the frequency of each symbol in the encrypted message. The most common symbol in the ciphertext very likely represents the most common letter in the language. By matching the frequency profiles of the ciphertext and the known language, a codebreaker could systematically reveal the original message. This technique was the basis of cryptanalysis for the next thousand years. The original manuscript was lost for centuries before being rediscovered in the 1980s in an Ottoman archive in Istanbul.
