The South Atlantic's strange architecture
The Abrolhos Bank reef system is built differently from any other on the planet. Instead of sprawling lattices of branching corals, its fundamental structures are massive, mushroom-shaped pinnacles called chapeirões. These formations are unique to this region of the South Atlantic. They grow vertically from the seafloor, sometimes reaching heights of 25 meters, before flaring out at the top into wide caps that can measure 50 meters in diameter. Where the pinnacles are dense, their caps merge to form extensive reef platforms several kilometers long.
The primary architect of these structures is the endemic Brazilian brain coral, Mussismilia braziliensis. This slow-growing, massive coral is a Neogene relict, part of an ancient lineage of scleractinians. It thrives in the often-turbid waters of the Abrolhos Bank, which are influenced by coastal river discharge. This environment, with its high sediment load and variable water quality, favors large, robust coral forms over the more delicate, fast-growing species that dominate reefs elsewhere. The chapeirões themselves are complex structures, with the coral living on a foundation of its own ancestors, cemented together by coralline algae.
An oasis of endemism under pressure
The Abrolhos Bank contains the highest marine biodiversity in the South Atlantic Ocean. This 46,000-square-kilometer extension of Brazil's continental shelf is home to life, much of it found nowhere else. Around 50 percent of the coral species and 20 percent of the reef fish in Abrolhos are endemic to Brazil. The complex, three-dimensional habitat created by the chapeirões supports this rich fauna, providing shelter for many invertebrates and fish, including the endangered greenbeak parrotfish (Scarus trispinosus).
The region is also a critical habitat for larger marine life. It is the most important breeding and calving ground for humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the entire Western South Atlantic. Between July and November, thousands of these whales congregate in the warm, shallow waters to give birth and nurse their young. Several species of threatened sea turtles and dolphins also inhabit the area.
Despite its importance, the Abrolhos reef system faces severe threats. Increased sediment runoff from coastal deforestation and dredging has degraded water quality, smothering corals. Overfishing has decimated populations of key predators like sharks and groupers. Rising sea temperatures present another danger, with researchers documenting a 15% decline in coral cover between 2006 and 2023 due to more frequent bleaching events. Conservation efforts are centered around the Abrolhos Marine National Park, established in 1983, which protects a fraction of this unique ecosystem.
