A plant without leaves
Wullschlaegelia aphylla is an orchid that has abandoned photosynthesis entirely. Lacking chlorophyll, the plant is a ghostly white to yellowish-brown color and has no leaves. It lives almost its entire life underground as a cluster of slender roots, known as tuberoids. This strange plant is a full mycoheterotroph, meaning it derives all its nutrients by stealing them from fungi in the soil. Specifically, it parasitizes saprotrophic fungi—species like Mycena and Gymnopus that are themselves busy decomposing dead organic matter on the forest floor.
This orchid's existence depends on damp, shaded forests with plenty of decaying material to support its fungal hosts. The plant itself is small and delicate, with a slender stem that eventually emerges from the soil. The stem and flowers are covered in distinctive brownish hairs made of swollen cells. These features distinguish it from the only other species in its genus, Wullschlaegelia calcarata.
The fleeting flower
For most of its life, Wullschlaegelia aphylla is hidden from sight. It only appears above ground for a brief period to flower and set seed. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme with minute white flowers. Each flower is non-resupinate, meaning it does not twist upside down during development as is common in many other orchids. The lateral sepals fuse with the base of the column to form a small, spur-like chin. After flowering, the plant produces a small, ovoid fruit containing numerous white, filiform seeds.
Its distribution is widespread but scattered, occurring in specific locations in the Caribbean—including Cuba and Jamaica—as well as parts of Central and South America. In the Caribbean, it is typically found in rainforests at elevations up to 600 meters. Its reliance on a complex three-part system of decaying matter, specific fungi, and the orchid itself makes it impossible to cultivate. Its presence is an indicator of a healthy forest ecosystem.
