From seabed to sunlight
The jagged, mushroom-shaped islands of the Waigeo karst labyrinth are the fossilized remains of an ancient marine ecosystem. During the Miocene Epoch, between 5.3 and 23 million years ago, this entire region was a shallow tropical sea. In these warm, sunlit waters, extensive coral reefs flourished, supporting a high diversity of marine life. The skeletons of countless generations of corals and other marine organisms, all made of calcium carbonate, accumulated on the seafloor, gradually compacting into thick layers of limestone.
Tectonic forces associated with the collision of the Pacific and Australian plates then began a slow but powerful process of uplift, lifting this ancient seabed far above sea level. Once exposed to the elements, the limestone began to dissolve. Rainwater, made slightly acidic by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and soil, infiltrated cracks and fissures in the rock. This weak carbonic acid relentlessly dissolved the limestone, a geological process known as karstification. Over millennia, this process sculpted the dramatic landscape seen today, carving the rock into steep-sided islands, sinkholes, and underwater caves. The distinctive mushroom shape of many islands comes from erosion by waves and bioerosion from marine organisms at sea level, undercutting the harder rock above.
A labyrinth of life
The karst landscape of Waigeo and the surrounding Raja Ampat archipelago is a maze of geological structures and unique habitats. The formation of the islands is heavily influenced by underlying fault lines and joint systems in the rock, which created preferential pathways for water to dissolve the limestone, resulting in the regular, almost grid-like patterns of islands in some areas. These tower-like karst islands rise from waters that can be up to 200 meters deep in the open channels between them.
This complex topography creates a wide array of ecological niches. The islands themselves are covered in dense rainforest, and their isolation has allowed for the evolution of endemic species. Waigeo hosts Wilson's Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus respublica) and the Waigeo spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus papuensis), a species of marsupial found only there. The area contains approximately 874 plant species, nine of which are endemic. The surrounding waters are part of the Coral Triangle, the center of marine biodiversity, containing over 540 species of hard coral (75% of the world's total) and more than 1,000 species of reef fish. Prehistoric cave paintings have also been found on steep limestone cliffs, indicating a long history of human interaction with this landscape.
