An ancient industrial operation
In the rocky outcrops of the Ventania System, a mountain range in the vast Pampas of Argentina, lies evidence of a long-running mining operation. For approximately 5,000 years, prehistoric people systematically entered cave systems here to extract valuable mineral pigments. The targets were deposits of ochre, an earthy substance full of iron oxides. These mines represent one of South America’s most enduring resource extraction sites, a place returned to by generations of hunter-gatherers.
The sought-after pigments are geologically simple but visually powerful. Red ochre’s color comes from the mineral hematite, an iron oxide (Fe₂O₃). The yellow and brown hues are derived from goethite, an iron oxyhydroxide (FeO(OH)). These minerals formed within the ancient rock of the mountain system, concentrating in veins and deposits accessible within the region's caves. Analysis of the pigments allows for a form of geochemical fingerprinting. This method confirms that ochre from this single source in the Ventania mountains appears at archaeological sites hundreds of kilometers away, evidence of a widespread distribution network among the mobile groups of Patagonia. The pigment was a valued commodity, moving across the region alongside other materials like obsidian from the Andes.
Tools and techniques of the miners
The archaeological record inside the mines shows the extraction process. The primary tools were simple and effective. Miners used hammerstones, often hard quartzite cobbles sourced from local riverbeds, to break the ochre deposits from the cave walls. The presence of numerous discarded and broken stone tools shows the intensity of the work. These artifacts, left where they were last used, map out the different areas of the mining operation.
The process did not stop with extraction. Evidence suggests that miners processed the raw ochre chunks on-site, grinding the material into a fine powder. This powder was the final product, ready for transport and use. Prehistoric groups across the region and throughout time used ochre for many purposes. It was a pigment for rock art, a colorant for decorating bodies and animal hides, and an element in mortuary rituals, with skeletal remains at some ancient burial sites showing traces of being covered in red ochre powder. Its uses may have also been practical; some studies suggest ochre has properties that can function as an insect repellent or a hide-tanning agent.
