Gravity at work
The city of Valparaíso is built upon 42 steep hills, or cerros, that rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. This topography made connecting the port-level business district, the "plan," with the residential areas on the hillsides a difficult engineering problem in the late 19th century. The solution was a network of funiculars, known locally as ascensores. These machines use the force of gravity to move people up and down slopes that are too severe for conventional transport.
The earliest systems were examples of applied physics. The Ascensor Concepción, inaugurated on December 1, 1883, initially operated using a water counterbalance system. This mechanism involves two cars connected by a single steel cable that loops around a large pulley wheel at the upper station. To initiate movement, a water tank fitted to the car at the top station was filled. This added mass made the upper car heavier than the lower car. When the brake was released, gravity would pull the heavier car down the slope, simultaneously pulling the lighter car up. Upon reaching the bottom, the water was discharged, and the process could be repeated. This design provided an energy-efficient solution before widespread electrical power was available. The first funicular to use an electric motor was the Ascensor Barón in 1906.
A network of steel and wood
At its peak, Valparaíso had nearly 30 funiculars running. Many of the original mechanical components were sourced from England and Germany. Today, about seven of these historic machines remain in consistent operation, forming a part of the public transport system. The engineering varies between them, with tracks climbing slopes at angles from 27 to 70 degrees. The Ascensor Artillería, opened in 1893, is one of the longest, with a track length of 175 meters. Its original design was delayed for a year due to a lack of water for its hydraulic machinery.
Not all of the city's ascensores are true funiculars. The Ascensor Polanco, built in 1915, is a unique outlier. It is the only true vertical elevator in the system. Passengers first enter a 150-meter-long horizontal tunnel at the base of the hill. From there, a single car lifts them vertically for 60 meters through a rock shaft before they exit via a 48-meter-long bridge connecting the tower to the hilltop. The other funiculars, like the Ascensor Concepción, travel on inclined rails. The Concepción has a track length of 69 meters and ascends at a 46-degree angle.
