The magma did not erupt onto the surface. Instead, it cooled slowly 2 to 3 kilometers underground, allowing for the formation of the coarse-grained granite visible today. The intense heat from this intrusion, a process called contact metamorphism, baked the surrounding sedimentary country rock. This country rock, primarily dark mudstone and sandstone of the Cretaceous Cerro Toro Formation, was transformed into the harder, darker hornfels that now forms the distinctive black caps on peaks like the Cuernos del Paine ("Horns of Paine"). This color contrast between the light-colored intrusive granite and the dark, older metamorphic rock records two different geological histories.
Glacial Sculpting and Emergence
For millions of years, the Paine laccolith remained buried. Tectonic uplift raised the entire block of rock, and erosional forces began to strip away the softer overlying sedimentary layers. This process of removal was dramatically accelerated during the Pleistocene ice ages, which peaked around 18,000 years ago. The massive Patagonian Ice Sheet and its subsequent glaciers carved through the landscape, exploiting weaknesses in the rock and sculpting deep valleys.
The granite of the laccolith proved far more resistant to this glacial erosion than the surrounding country rock. As the glaciers scraped and plucked away the softer material, the durable granite core was gradually exhumed, emerging as the sheer walls and spires seen today. The main towers—Torre Central (2,460 m), Torre Sur (2,500 m), and Torre Norte (2,260 m)—are the most dramatic results of this differential erosion. The dark metamorphic rock that remains on the tops of the Cuernos del Paine are known as "roof pendants," isolated remnants of the original rock that once covered the entire granite body. This geological process is not finished; ongoing erosion continues to expose more of the 12-million-year-old granite.
