A hostile takeover in the fish's mouth
In the warm coastal waters of the Gulf of California, a biological drama unfolds inside the mouths of fish. The protagonist is Cymothoa exigua, a parasitic isopod more commonly known as the tongue-eating louse. This crustacean is the only known parasite to functionally replace an entire organ of its host. Its life cycle is a specialized process of invasion and substitution.
The process begins when a juvenile, free-swimming louse finds a suitable host, often a species of snapper. It enters the fish through the gills, a common entry point for aquatic parasites. Once inside, the young isopod attaches to the gill arches and begins its life as a male. All tongue-eating lice start as males, a condition known as protandrous hermaphroditism. If a host fish has no female louse, a male will grow to about 10 millimeters and transform into a female. This newly transformed female then relocates from the gills to the fish's mouth.
Using its seven pairs of sharp, hook-like legs, the female louse latches onto the base of the fish's tongue. It pierces the tissue and severs the blood vessels that supply the organ. Deprived of blood, the fish's tongue gradually atrophies and falls off. The parasite then firmly attaches its body to the remaining tongue stub, orienting itself to face out of the fish's mouth. At this point, the louse's body becomes the fish's new, fully functional tongue.
Life as a living prosthesis
Once established, the female louse can grow up to 29 millimeters long and 14 millimeters wide. Smaller male lice, typically 7.5 to 15 millimeters long, often remain in the host's gill chamber, ready to mate with the female. The female holds the fertilized eggs in a kangaroo-like pouch called a marsupium until they hatch. She then releases the new generation of juvenile lice into the water to find their own hosts.
The fish, now equipped with a crustacean prosthesis, continues to live a surprisingly normal life. It can still hold and swallow prey, using the rigid body of the isopod much like its original tongue. The louse does not share the fish's meals. It feeds on the host's blood or mucus. This parasitic relationship can last for years.
While the host fish survives, it doesn't escape unharmed. Fish afflicted by Cymothoa exigua are often underweight compared to their unparasitized counterparts, likely due to the constant feeding by the louse. The parasite's presence can affect the host's growth and overall health. When the host fish dies, the louse detaches and may cling to the outside of the fish's head or body for a short time before its own life cycle ends.
