A timeline in sediment
Wonderwerk Cave extends 140 meters horizontally into the Kuruman Hills, a solution cavity formed in ancient dolomite rock. Over eons, wind and water deposited sediments inside, creating a layered record of natural and cultural history up to seven meters deep. This deep deposit preserves a nearly continuous two-million-year record of hominin activity and environmental change.
The lowest archaeological layers, dated to approximately 2 million years ago, contain simple Oldowan-type stone tools. These primitive choppers and flakes are some of the earliest tools found inside any cave. Researchers suggest the most likely toolmaker was Homo habilis, linking Wonderwerk to the dawn of stone tool technology seen at sites like Olduvai Gorge. Paleoenvironmental data from these ancient layers, including analysis of pollen, phytoliths, and animal remains, indicate the environment was a dry, open savanna.
Higher up the sequence, a clear technological shift appears. Around 1 million years ago, the simple Oldowan tools are replaced by more sophisticated Acheulean hand axes. These tools are associated with a later hominin, likely Homo erectus. The sheer volume of sediment and artifacts provides a uniquely detailed timeline of evolving hominin behavior against a backdrop of fluctuating African climates.
The hearth of humanity
Deep inside the cave, about 30 meters from the entrance, lies evidence of one of humanity's most important technological achievements: the controlled use of fire. Within a layer dated securely to 1 million years ago, scientists have identified microscopic traces of wood ash, burned bone fragments, and ashed plant remains. The location is too deep inside the cave for the fires to be the result of natural wildfires.
Microstratigraphic analysis shows these are the remains of small, controlled fires, likely fueled by grasses and leaves, which burned at temperatures around 500° Celsius. This is the earliest widely accepted evidence for the deliberate use of fire by hominins in an archaeological context. The discovery suggests that Homo erectus was making advanced tools and was using fire for warmth, protection, or cooking.
The upper layers of Wonderwerk Cave continue the story into the more recent past. The Middle and Later Stone Ages are represented by finds including engraved stones, decorated ostrich eggshells, and pigments. Rock paintings adorn the walls near the entrance, some possibly less than 1,000 years old, showing that Homo sapiens continued to use this remarkable shelter until recent times.
