At Twin Rivers Koppie, a collapsed cave system about 24 kilometers southwest of Lusaka, archaeologists unearthed a collection of mineral pigments that pushes back the timeline for complex human behaviors. The hominins living here, likely Homo heidelbergensis, were systematically gathering and processing iron-rich minerals to create colored powders long before Homo sapiens emerged.
Excavations led by archaeologist Lawrence Barham of the University of Liverpool revealed over 300 pieces of pigment. This was not a random assortment of colored rocks. The collection includes hematite, ochre, limonite, and specularite, which produce a range of colors from red, yellow, and pink to a glittering purple. These minerals were collected; they were actively processed. The evidence is clear on the artifacts themselves: grinding stones and quartzite cobbles are still stained with pigment residue, and many of the mineral chunks show facets from being scraped and ground into powder. This is one of the earliest and most extensive examples of pigment processing known anywhere in the world.

The variety and quantity of pigments at Twin Rivers suggest this was a sustained and purposeful activity. The hominins selectively chose specific raw materials, ignoring duller iron-rich stones available locally in favor of those with intense color and even sparkle. The purpose of the final product is a subject of scientific debate. One idea is the use of pigments for body painting, a form of symbolic expression for ritual or social signaling. Another possibility is more functional. Powdered ochre is an effective antiseptic for curing animal hides, a UV-blocking sunscreen, or an insect repellent. It can also be mixed with plant resins to create a strong adhesive, or mastic, for attaching stone points to wooden spears—a major technological advance for hunting. The presence of Middle Stone Age tool technologies at the site makes this a plausible application.
Whatever the exact use, the toolkit at Twin Rivers demonstrates that the cognitive abilities for long-term planning, material science, and possibly abstract thought existed in the human lineage well before our own species appeared.
