A foundation of ancient rock
The Torngat Mountains are built from some of the oldest rocks on Earth. Composed of Precambrian gneisses from the Canadian Shield, certain formations date back roughly 3.9 billion years. These rocks expose a geological history that encompasses about eighty percent of the planet's existence. The range forms a peninsula separating Ungava Bay from the Atlantic, with the highest peaks in mainland Canada east of the Rocky Mountains. The highest point is Mount Caubvick (known as Mont D'Iberville in Quebec), which reaches an elevation of 1,652 meters (5,420 feet).
The entire landscape shows geological history. The collision of ancient tectonic plates and subsequent folding and faulting created the mountain range's structure. Archaeological sites in the region show evidence of human presence dating back almost 7,000 years, including Maritime Archaic, Pre-Dorset, and Dorset Paleo-eskimo cultures, who were the predecessors of modern Inuit. The name itself, Torngat, derives from the Inuktitut word Torngait, meaning "place of spirits," reflecting a long-standing cultural connection to the land.
The sculpting power of ice
The dramatic fjords and sharp ridges seen today are the products of massive glaciation. During the last ice age, the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered much of the mountains, flowing through existing river valleys and carving them into deep, U-shaped troughs. This process created sheer rock walls that rise abruptly from the sea, with some cliffs in Nachvak and Saglek fjords reaching heights of over 900 meters.
The sculpting continues on a smaller scale. More than 100 small, active glaciers persist in the Torngats, located in high-altitude cirques. These are the only remaining glaciers in eastern continental North America. The landscape is still adjusting to the loss of the immense weight of the ice sheets through a process of post-glacial rebound. This arctic tundra environment, lying entirely above the tree line, is characterized by extensive and discontinuous permafrost. The cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Labrador Current support a marine ecosystem that includes the polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and caribou (Rangifer tarandus) for which the region is known.
