A Miocene Menagerie
The Shivalik Hills, a foothill range of the Himalayas, are composed of sediments that eroded from the rising mountains over millions of years. These deposits, known as the Siwalik Group, are several kilometers thick and range in age from about 18 million to 600,000 years old. During the Middle and Late Miocene epoch (roughly 14 to 6 million years ago), this region was a warm subtropical forest, very different from the landscape today. The sediments, primarily sandstones and mudstones laid down by ancient river systems, created ideal conditions for preserving the remains of the animals that lived there.
This area has yielded one of the world's most significant collections of Miocene vertebrate fossils. The fauna included ancient elephants, rhinoceroses, horses, and massive giraffids like Sivatherium giganteum. Carnivores were also present, including the saber-toothed cat Megantereon falconeri. The diversity of life captured in these rocks shows an ancient ecosystem. The fossil record tracks millions of years of evolutionary history as the climate and environment changed with the continued uplift of the Himalayas.
The Orangutan Connection
Among the most important fossils from the Shivalik Hills are those of extinct apes. The area holds the richest deposits of fossil hominoids in Asia. The best-known of these is Sivapithecus, a genus of ape that lived between 12.5 and 8.5 million years ago. Three species are recognized: Sivapithecus indicus, Sivapithecus sivalensis, and the larger Sivapithecus parvada. Sivapithecus was about the size of a modern chimpanzee, around 1.5 meters in body length, and likely lived in the trees.
The facial and dental anatomy of Sivapithecus shows many similarities to modern orangutans (Pongo). Features like narrowly set eyes, a concave face, and large central incisors strongly suggest it is a close relative, or even a direct ancestor, of today's orangutans. This discovery challenged earlier ideas that focused primate evolution solely on Africa, demonstrating Asia's role. It is theorized that as the climate in South Asia became cooler and drier toward the end of the Miocene, the descendants of Sivapithecus migrated to the wetter forests of Southeast Asia, their modern home. Another massive primate, Gigantopithecus, also lived in this region between 9 and 6 million years ago and was one of the largest primates ever to exist.
