A fortress of impossible stones
High above the city of Cusco, at an altitude of 3,701 meters (12,142 feet), sits the Inca complex of Sacsayhuamán. Its most prominent features are three massive, parallel walls that zigzag for nearly 400 meters. Built in the 15th century under the rule of Inca Pachacuti, the walls are a masterpiece of polygonal masonry. The builders used massive blocks of limestone, with the largest estimates of weight ranging from 128 to almost 200 tonnes. These stones, some moved from quarries over 35 kilometers away, were shaped and fitted together without mortar. The joints are so precise that it is often said a single piece of paper cannot fit between them.
This construction method gives the walls immense stability, allowing them to survive centuries of seismic activity. While the Spanish colonialists dismantled much of the upper portions of Sacsayhuamán to build their own structures in Cusco, the enormous foundation stones were too large to move and remain in place. It is on these immovable megaliths that a persistent archaeological puzzle appears: scores of raised knobs, or protuberances, jutting out from the otherwise smooth stone faces.
The enigma of the knobs
The purpose of these stone knobs is unknown, and several competing theories attempt to explain their existence. One of the most common hypotheses suggests they were functional, serving as lifting bosses. In this scenario, ropes would have been looped around the knobs to help workers hoist and maneuver the multi-ton blocks into their final positions. Evidence for this can be seen in other ancient cultures, like the Greeks and Romans, who used similar-looking bosses for lifting. Many of the knobs at Sacsayhuamán are in locations that would seem to hinder, not help, with lifting—some are near the bottom of the blocks or in asymmetrical positions that would unbalance a heavy load.
Another theory proposes that the knobs are simply unfinished work. According to this idea, the protrusions are what remains from the quarrying and shaping process, and the Inca masons intended to grind them down but never completed the task. The shaping was done primarily with hammerstones, chipping away at the larger block. Yet, the intentional and often patterned placement of the knobs on many stones makes this explanation less likely for all instances.
A third category of theories suggests a symbolic or ceremonial function. Given the Inca's deep cultural connection to stone and landscape, the knobs might have represented constellations, sacred mountains (Apus), or served some other purpose within their cosmology. Some researchers have even speculated they could be a form of three-dimensional, tactile writing system, though there is little evidence to support this. The function of the Sacsayhuamán knobs is a mystery, carved into the enduring stones of the Inca fortress.
