A line drawn across a continent
The Qinba Mountains, a vast range stretching 1,600 kilometers across central China, are a fundamental geological and climatic barrier. This east-west chain marks the watershed between China's two largest rivers, separating the Yellow River basin to the north from the Yangtze River basin to the south. Geologically, the range is a complex fold-and-fault system that began forming over 200 million years ago as the South China and North China tectonic plates collided. The uplift accelerated around 50 million years ago with the Indian plate's collision into Asia.
This imposing topography, with its highest peak, Mount Taibai, reaching 3,767 meters (12,359 feet), creates a climatic divide. The mountains block cold, dry air from moving south in the winter and intercept warm, moist air from the south in the summer. This results in a temperate, semi-arid climate to the north and a much wetter, subtropical climate to the south. The range effectively delineates the 800 mm annual precipitation line and the 0°C January isotherm for China. This climatic separation affects everything from vegetation—temperate deciduous forests to the north, subtropical evergreen forests to the south—to agriculture.
An isolated cradle of life
The extreme topography and its role as a glacial refugium during the Pleistocene ice ages have made the Qinba mountains a biodiversity hotspot. The range has approximately 3,800 plant species and 587 animal species. Several of these species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth.
The most famous resident is the Qinling giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis), recognized as a distinct subspecies in 2005. Compared to the more common Sichuan panda, the Qinling subspecies has a smaller skull, larger molars, and a distinctive dark brown and light brown coat. Genetic studies suggest the Qinling and Sichuan populations split between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago.
Other unique mammals include the golden takin (Budorcas taxicolor bedfordi), a large goat-antelope with a thick, golden coat that inhabits forests at elevations between 1,200 and 3,500 meters. The golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is another primate, able to withstand colder temperatures than any other non-human primate. They live in the temperate mountain forests, spending nearly 97% of their time in trees and feeding primarily on lichens.
