A five-way mountain pile-up
The Pamir Knot is a geological center where five of the world's major mountain ranges converge: the Himalayas, Tian Shan, Karakoram, Kunlun, and Hindu Kush. This immense upland is the direct result of the Indian Plate driving northward into the Eurasian Plate. The collision began between 50 and 60 million years ago, closing the ancient Tethys Sea that once separated the landmasses. Today, the Indian Plate continues its push at a rate of about 40 millimeters per year, a speed comparable to the growth of human fingernails.
This relentless pressure has dramatic consequences for the planet's crust. In this region, the continental crust has been compressed and thickened to between 65 and 88 kilometers, more than double the average thickness of continental crust elsewhere on Earth. This immense crustal shortening has buckled the landscape, creating some of the highest-altitude terrain on the planet, earning it the nickname "The Roof of the World." The process is so extreme that it has caused a large piece of the Asian continental lower crust to delaminate and subduct into the mantle, a process usually associated with denser oceanic plates.
A land of ice and tremors
The incredible tectonic forces at work in the Pamir Knot make it one of the most seismically active continental regions. The strain manifests as frequent earthquakes, including an unusual concentration of intermediate-depth earthquakes occurring between 70 and 250 kilometers below the surface. These deep tremors are a direct consequence of the subducting slab of continental crust being forced into the Earth's mantle.
The high altitude creates a formidable landscape of rock and ice. The region has thousands of glaciers. The most important of these is the Fedchenko Glacier, which, at 77 kilometers in length, is the longest glacier in the world outside of the polar regions. Its ice reaches a thickness of up to 1,000 meters in some places. The peaks here are among the world's tallest. Kongur Tagh, located wholly within Xinjiang, is the highest peak in the Pamir range, standing at 7,649 meters (25,095 feet). The meltwater from these vast frozen reservoirs feeds major Central Asian rivers like the Amu Darya, providing water resources for millions of people.
