An invisible foundation
The Kyaungdawgyi monastery at Pakhan Gyi is a masterpiece of 19th-century Burmese architecture. Completed in 1868 during the Konbaung dynasty, the enormous wooden structure rests on 254 massive teak pillars. Visitors walk through halls decorated with complex wood carvings that show scenes from the lives of the Buddha. The building people see today, however, has a much deeper history, one that was completely invisible until scientists looked beneath the ground.
An archaeological survey of the monastery grounds used geophysical methods to map subsurface features. The primary tool was ground-penetrating radar (GPR), a non-invasive technique that sends high-frequency radio waves into the earth. As these waves encounter different materials—such as soil, brick, or stone—they reflect back to a receiver. The travel time and strength of these reflections create a detailed 3D map of buried structures. The GPR data from Pakhan Gyi was unambiguous. Directly beneath the 19th-century teak building and its courtyard lay the foundations of much older brick stupas.
Centuries of superposition
The radar profiles revealed a vertical timeline of construction. The data showed distinct layers of building activity, with older structures demolished and new ones built directly on top of their remains. This process of superposition created a sequence of foundations spanning approximately 800 years. Each generation of devotees treated the location as sacred ground, layering their own acts of faith over the buildings of their ancestors. This finding confirms the site’s continuous religious importance for centuries before the current monastery was constructed.
This long history is consistent with the archaeology of the surrounding region. Pakhan Gyi is located in an area dense with ancient religious sites, many dating to the Bagan period, which began in the 11th century. The geophysical survey provides concrete evidence that this specific location was an active center for worship and construction long before the Konbaung kings came to power. The data shows multiple older temples, but a series of them, each contributing to a historical layer cake of brick and earth hidden just feet below the surface.
