A City from a Single Source
The plains of Bagan are dotted with thousands of Buddhist temples, stupas, and monasteries built between the 9th and 13th centuries. For centuries, the construction of this vast sacred area was a logistical marvel. Recent scientific analysis reveals a reason for this achievement: a highly centralized and standardized system of production. Geochemical studies of the fired bricks from numerous temples across the 104-square-kilometer archaeological zone show that they share an identical elemental fingerprint. This indicates the clay for nearly the entire city came from a single, massive source.
Researchers used techniques like Energy-Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) to analyze the chemical composition of the bricks. This method bombards a sample with X-rays and measures the emitted secondary X-rays to determine the exact elements present, such as silicon dioxide, aluminum, and iron. The results from temples built over a 250-year period during the kingdom's height consistently show one origin for the raw material, likely the clay-rich banks of the nearby Irrawaddy River. This level of uniformity across such a large area and long timespan suggests a state-controlled monopoly on brick production.
The Royal Brickworks
The evidence points to a massive, state-run industrial operation. The bricks themselves show a remarkable degree of standardization. Though sizes varied slightly between monuments, a common large format was approximately 36 x 18 x 6 centimeters. This consistency simplified the building process, allowing for rapid and predictable construction using established techniques like the radiating arch and vaulted ceilings, which were built without any iron or wood supports. The builders laid the kiln-fired bricks with great precision, using a simple clay mortar as the binding agent.
This centralized production model was efficient. Instead of each temple project sourcing its own local clay, a central authority managed the extraction, manufacturing, and distribution of millions of bricks. Some bricks even have the names of the villages where they were made stamped on them, suggesting a coordinated system of labor and transport, often by boat. This organization allowed the Pagan Kingdom to construct over 10,000 religious structures during its golden age, creating one of the archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. The ability to maintain this system for over two and a half centuries demonstrates political stability and administrative capacity.
