A Devonian death trap
Some 380 million years ago, during the Devonian Period, much of modern-day Scotland was located south of the equator. It formed part of a large continent called Euramerica, or the Old Red Sandstone continent. In this semi-arid landscape, a vast and complex system of freshwater lakes known as the Orcadian Basin stretched from Orkney and Shetland to the Moray Firth. The largest of these bodies of water was Lake Orcadie, which at times covered an area of at least 50,000 square kilometers.
The layers of sediment that settled at the bottom of this ancient lake are now exposed as the flagstones of Orkney and Caithness. Within these layers, particularly in formations like the Sandwick Fish Bed, paleontologists find an extraordinary record of life and sudden death. The lake's chemistry was important for this incredible preservation. The water was likely stratified, with a deep, oxygen-starved (anoxic) layer at the bottom. Periodically, the lake chemistry would change, perhaps due to seasonal algal blooms that would then die and decompose, consuming all the available oxygen.
These anoxic events were lethal, causing catastrophic mass kills of the lake's diverse fish population. The dead fish sank into the oxygen-free depths where scavengers could not survive and the normal process of decay was halted. This resulted in the preservation of complete, articulated skeletons, frozen in their final moments. The fine-grained muds captured every detail, from bony armor plates to delicate fin structures.
The armored inhabitants
The Orcadian Basin was teeming with fish, representing a stage in vertebrate evolution. The fossils found in the flagstones are not of familiar modern fish, but of stranger, heavily armored groups that dominated the Devonian, often called the "Age of Fishes".
Among the most common finds are the placoderms, or armored fish. Coccosteus cuspidatus was a widespread predator with a jointed neck and sharp, bony plates that functioned like teeth. Another placoderm, Pterichthyodes milleri, was a bottom-dweller with bizarre, wing-like pectoral fins, also covered in armor. The fossils also include acanthodians, or "spiny sharks," such as Diplacanthus and Mesacanthus, which were smaller fish protected by sharp spines on their fins.
Lake Orcadie also contained early lobe-finned fishes, the group that includes the ancestors of all land-dwelling vertebrates. Species like Osteolepis macrolepidotus and the lungfish Dipterus valenciennesi are found exquisitely preserved in these beds. These fossils show the anatomy of the development of bones and fins that would eventually give rise to legs. The quality of preservation is so high that thousands of complete skeletons have been recovered from sites like the Achanarras and Sandwick fish beds.
