A mystery measured in tons
On Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula and the island of Isle Royale, thousands of ancient mining pits dot the region. These pits, some reaching depths of 60 feet, are the remnants of the oldest known metalworking in North America. Beginning as early as 7,000 years ago, prehistoric peoples began extracting the region's unique native copper. This copper is among the purest on Earth, often exceeding 99% purity, meaning it could be worked without smelting.
Using diorite hammerstones and fire-setting—heating the rock and then dousing it with cold water to make it crack—ancient miners broke away the host rock to get to the metal. The scale of this operation causes the mystery. A 19th-century estimate, still widely cited, suggests that between 500,000 and 1.5 billion pounds of copper were removed over several millennia. Yet, the archaeological record of copper artifacts in North America accounts for only a tiny fraction of this amount. The peoples of the Old Copper Culture did create a variety of items, including awls, projectile points, fishhooks, and beads. But the total known weight of these artifacts is insignificant compared to the estimated tonnage pulled from the ground. The question remains: where did all the copper go?
Competing theories and missing evidence
The enormous discrepancy between the amount of copper mined and the number of artifacts found has led to several theories. One of the most debated is the idea of a trans-Atlantic trade network that supplied Old World civilizations with New World copper during the Bronze Age. Proponents suggest the timing aligns with the European Bronze Age and that the purity of Michigan copper would have been highly valued. However, mainstream archaeology finds no direct evidence for this; no Michigan copper has been definitively identified in European artifacts, and no Old World artifacts have been found in the mining areas.
Another theory posits that the initial estimates of half a billion pounds of extracted copper are a wild exaggeration. The calculations were made before modern archaeological methods and may not be reliable. The actual amount mined might have been far smaller, used locally and traded across North America over thousands of years. Many items were likely lost, buried, or even melted down and recycled by later cultures, leaving a sparse archaeological trail.
A third possibility is that a large amount of copper was cached in burial sites or hoards that have not yet been discovered. Artifacts made of Keweenaw copper have been found as far away as Florida, showing that extensive trade networks did exist across the continent. It's conceivable that the vast majority of the mined copper remains hidden, waiting to be found. The mining activity itself appears to have stopped abruptly around 1,250 B.C. for reasons that are also unknown, adding to the puzzle.
