A clock for the sun
The Lusehøj Mound is one of the largest Bronze Age burial mounds in Denmark, measuring 36 meters in diameter and standing 6 meters high. Located near the small settlement of Voldtofte, the mound dates to the Late Bronze Age, around 800 BCE. Its construction shows a sophisticated understanding of solar astronomy. The internal passage and burial chamber are precisely oriented to capture the light of the rising sun on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.
On this specific day, as the sun appears on the horizon, a beam of light penetrates the long, narrow passage and strikes the back wall of the central chamber. This event lasts for only a few minutes. For the people of the Nordic Bronze Age, the sun was central of their belief system, often depicted on artifacts like the famous Trundholm Sun Chariot. This alignment suggests that the tomb was designed to connect the deceased with the solar cycle, perhaps symbolizing rebirth or a passage into the afterlife timed with the "rebirth" of the sun as the days begin to lengthen again. Similar solar alignments are found in other prehistoric European monuments, such as Newgrange in Ireland, indicating a shared tradition of monumental archaeoastronomy.
The man in the mound
The first major excavation of Lusehøj was conducted in 1861 under the direction of King Frederick VII of Denmark, who was a keen amateur archaeologist. Inside the stone-cist burial chamber, his team discovered the cremated remains of a powerful and wealthy man. The ashes were contained within a large bronze vessel which also was an urn.
Subsequent analysis of the finds has revealed surprising details about Bronze Age trade and society. The cremated bones were wrapped in a woven cloth. For a long time, this fabric was assumed to be local linen. Modern microscopic and strontium isotope analysis, however, proved the fibers came from wild nettles that grew in a region corresponding to present-day Austria. This discovery shows that either the raw materials or the finished textile traveled over a thousand kilometers to reach Funen. An even more compelling hypothesis suggests the powerful man buried at Lusehøj may have died in Central Europe, and his remains were transported a great distance for burial in this astronomically significant mound. This find challenges the idea that Bronze Age communities were isolated, showing instead a network of long-distance trade and cultural connections.
