Language as a mental filter
The language you speak quietly organizes your reality. This idea, known as linguistic relativity, suggests that the grammatical structures of our native tongues shape how we think and perceive the world. Here at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, researchers conduct experiments to test this very concept. Their work investigates how language filters attention, memory, and perception.
A central question in this field is how different languages handle time. English, for example, has obligatory tense. You cannot form a basic sentence without marking the verb for past, present, or future. "She walks," "she walked." Other languages, such as Indonesian or Mandarin Chinese, treat tense as optional. You can specify when an event happened, but the grammar does not force you to. This grammatical difference led researchers here to ask a simple question: does this constant, obligatory marking of time in some languages train their speakers to pay more attention to when things happen?
An experiment in memory
To find an answer, cognitive scientists designed a series of non-linguistic tests. They recruited speakers of different languages, including some with obligatory tense and some without. Participants would watch short, simple videos of ambiguous events—for example, a person accidentally knocking over a glass. After a series of such videos, they were given a surprise memory test. The test would probe their memory for different aspects of the event. For instance, they might be asked to identify which person performed the action ('what') or on which day the action occurred ('when').
The results showed a clear pattern. Speakers of languages that grammatically require tense, like English, consistently performed better when asked to recall the timing of an event. Speakers of languages with optional tense, like Indonesian, were comparatively better at remembering the agent who performed the action. The grammatical patterns of their native language had directed their attention, influencing which details of an event were encoded more strongly into memory. These findings provide evidence that the structure of our language is a tool, shaping what we habitually notice and what we forget. The effect is not about what a language allows you to think, but what it requires you to pay attention to on a daily basis.
