A delicate hydrological balance
The Peace-Athabasca Delta is a vast, 3,900-square-kilometer wetland complex in northeastern Alberta, with 80% located inside Wood Buffalo National Park. It is one of the world's largest inland freshwater deltas, formed at the confluence of the Peace, Athabasca, and Birch rivers as they flow into Lake Athabasca. The delta's existence depends on a unique hydrological process driven by the seasonal cycles of the rivers. Historically, the powerful spring runoff of the Peace River would create a natural "hydrological dam". This dam effect was often amplified by massive ice jams, which would halt the outflow from Lake Athabasca and force the waters of the smaller Athabasca River to reverse course, flooding the delta.
This regular flooding is the lifeblood of the delta. It recharges thousands of isolated, higher-elevation "perched basins" and wetlands, depositing fresh water and nutrients. These basins provide habitat for a wide array of species, from muskrats to migratory birds. The entire system is a dynamic area of open lakes, channels, marshes, and large, grass and sedge meadows. This interaction of water and land supports 42 mammal species, 20 fish species, and 214 species of birds.
The long shadow of a dam
In 1968, the completion of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam on the Peace River in British Columbia, 1,200 kilometers upstream, fundamentally altered the delta's natural rhythm. The dam's reservoir, Williston Lake, captures the river's powerful spring freshet to generate hydroelectricity. This regulation has significantly reduced the peak spring flows that are necessary to create the ice jams and hydrological damming that flood the delta. Between 1968 and 1971, the delta experienced a prolonged drying period, and the area of its nine largest lakes decreased by 28 percent.
The reduction in rejuvenating floods has caused many of the perched basins to dry up, allowing terrestrial vegetation to encroach on former wetlands. This has had cascading effects on the ecosystem. The Mikisew Cree First Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, and local Métis communities, whose cultures are tied to the delta, have observed sharp declines in muskrat populations, which were once a staple for food and the local trapping economy. Traditional travel routes through the waterways have become impassable due to low water levels. In response, First Nations have initiated community-based monitoring programs, blending traditional ecological knowledge with scientific methods to track the health of the delta and advocate for its protection.
