A gelatinous parasite
The snow fungus, Tremella fuciformis, is a gelatinous mushroom with a long history in Chinese cuisine and traditional medicine. Its white, frond-like lobes give it the appearance of a sea anemone or a cluster of translucent blossoms. This species is found in tropical and subtropical regions, typically on dead or fallen branches of broadleaf trees. Unlike many fungi, T. fuciformis is a mycoparasite, meaning it does not consume the wood it grows on directly. Instead, it is a parasitic yeast that attacks and feeds on other fungi, specifically species from the Annulohypoxylon genus, which are wood-rot pathogens. The snow fungus grows as a slimy film until it finds its host, an encounter that triggers the aggressive mycelial growth needed to form its distinctive fruiting body.
The fungus's jelly-like consistency and remarkable water retention are due to its unique chemical composition. It is rich in long-chain polysaccharides, which are complex sugars. The main bioactive components are known as Tremella fuciformis polysaccharides (TFPs). These structures, primarily composed of mannose, xylose, and glucuronic acid, can have molecular weights up to 1.3 to 1.8 million Daltons. This structure allows the fungus to absorb and hold up to 500 times its own weight in water. This property is central to its applications in both medicine and cosmetics.
From ancient tonic to modern science
For centuries, Tremella fuciformis has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a "Yin tonic," believed to nourish the body and promote hydration. Legend suggests that Yang Guifei, a royal concubine during the Tang Dynasty (8th century) famed for her beauty, used snow fungus to maintain her complexion. Today, scientific investigation is exploring the mechanisms behind these traditional uses. The polysaccharides in the fungus show a range of biological activities, including immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. Research indicates that these polysaccharides can increase the activity of immune cells like macrophages.
In 2002, the Chinese Food and Drug Administration approved "Tremella Fuciformis polysaccharide enteric capsules" to help with leukopenia, a low white blood cell count—in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The polysaccharides also demonstrate neuroprotective properties, potentially shielding nerve cells from damage and inhibiting the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in the brain. In cosmetics, the fungus is a humectant. Its polysaccharides form a hydrating film on the skin's surface, improving elasticity and barrier function. Because the particles are smaller than those of hyaluronic acid, they may penetrate the skin more readily. The commercial cultivation of Tremella fuciformis, which began in China in 1894, now uses a "dual culture" method where a sawdust substrate is inoculated with both the snow fungus and its host fungus to ensure a successful harvest. As of 1997, estimated production in China reached 130,000 tonnes.
