A Prehistoric Hunting Calendar
On the Hoedjiespunt Peninsula, a finger of land curving into Saldanha Bay, archaeologists found a dense collection of fossilized bones belonging to the Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus). These were specific bones. They were a clue, left behind by Middle Stone Age people, that fundamentally alters our understanding of when humans developed complex cognitive abilities. The site, known as Hoedjiespunt 1 (HDP1), contains remains dating back to the last interglacial period, approximately 115,000 to 130,000 years ago. The bones show that these early coastal dwellers were not scavenging randomly; they were planning, timing their hunts with precision to exploit a predictable, seasonal resource.
The evidence lies in the age of the seals. An overwhelming number of the bones belonged to pups around nine months old. This specific age is important. Cape fur seals have a highly synchronized breeding cycle. Pups are born in November and December and are weaned the following year around August and September. At this nine-month mark, they are at their most vulnerable, still naive and no longer protected by their mothers. The bone assemblage at Hoedjiespunt shows that early humans understood this pattern. They knew exactly when and where to show up each year for the most efficient hunt. This behavior demonstrates an ability to track time, remember resource locations, and plan for future needs, all hallmarks of what is known as "behavioral modernity."
Pushing Back the Clock on Cognition
The concept of behavioral modernity includes abilities like symbolic thought, advanced toolmaking, and complex social structures. For a long time, the prevailing theory was that these traits appeared suddenly in a "human revolution" around 50,000 years ago, likely in Europe. The discoveries at Hoedjiespunt and other South African sites like Blombos Cave and Pinnacle Point challenge that narrative. The planned, seasonal hunting of seals at Hoedjiespunt shows long-term planning and ecological knowledge. This behavior shows that the cognitive foundations for modern human behavior were being laid in Africa far earlier than once believed.
The people at Hoedjiespunt were systematically exploiting their coastal environment. Alongside the seal bones, researchers have found shellfish remains, such as limpets and mussels, and stone tools. They even brought in raw materials, like silcrete, from distances of 10-30 km to make specific tools, indicating they provisioned themselves for planned trips to the coast. This was not an opportunistic existence. It was a calculated strategy of resource management, passed down through generations, on the coast of South Africa more than 100,000 years ago.
