The Invisible Animal
In 1999, psychologists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris conducted a now-famous experiment. They asked participants to watch a 75-second video of two teams of three players passing basketballs. One team wore white shirts, the other black. The instruction was simple: count the number of passes made by the team in white. Partway through the video, a person in a full gorilla costume walks into the middle of the game, turns to the camera, thumps its chest, and walks away. The entire event lasts for 9 seconds. The surprising result was that roughly half of the participants—54% in the original study—completely failed to see the gorilla.
This phenomenon is called inattentional blindness. It demonstrates that we can be blind to obvious and unexpected objects when our attention is focused on a specific task. It is not a failure of vision, but a failure of attention. The brain, busy with the demanding task of counting passes, filters out the unexpected primate as irrelevant information. Daniel Simons, a professor at the University of Illinois, researches the limits of perception and awareness at the Beckman Institute. While the original experiment was filmed at Harvard University where both Simons and Chabris worked at the time, Simons' subsequent work at the Beckman Institute has built upon these findings.
Attention is Not a Video Camera
The original experiment included several variations to test the limits of this cognitive blind spot. In some versions, the gorilla was semi-transparent, and in others, it was fully opaque. The "opaque" condition, where the gorilla was clearly visible, still resulted in 42% of viewers missing it. The difficulty of the task also mattered. When participants were given an "easy" counting task (counting all passes) versus a "hard" one (counting aerial and bounce passes separately), the failure to see the gorilla was more pronounced in the hard condition. The effect is so powerful that even when people's eyes look directly at the gorilla, they often do not "see" it.
The implications of inattentional blindness extend far beyond a video of a gorilla. The research has shown how this cognitive quirk affects experts in real-world scenarios. In one follow-up study, 24 radiologists were asked to examine CT lung scans for cancerous nodules. A gorilla, 48 times larger than the average nodule, was inserted into the final scan. An astonishing 83% of the radiologists missed it, even though eye-tracking data showed that most of them had looked directly at its location. This work, much of which is associated with Simons' Visual Cognition Laboratory at the University of Illinois, shows that our intuitive sense of visual awareness is limited. We believe we see the world as it is, but we actually see only the parts we pay attention to.
