A curved arc of galaxies stretching 3.3 billion light-years across space, discovered in 2021. It's so vast it challenges the fundamental assumption that the universe looks the same in all directions.
An impossibly large observation
In June 2021, astronomers announced the discovery of a structure so large it defies standard cosmological models. Known as the Giant Arc, it is an enormous crescent of galaxies, gas, and dust located approximately 9.2 billion light-years from Earth. The structure spans an astonishing 3.3 billion light-years, which is about 1/15th the radius of the observable universe.
The Giant Arc was identified by Alexia Lopez, then a PhD student at the University of Central Lancashire, using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The discovery was not made by directly imaging the galaxies, which are too faint and distant. Instead, Lopez's team analyzed the light from roughly 40,000 quasars—extremely luminous and distant galactic cores. As light from these quasars travels toward Earth, it passes through the gas halos of intervening galaxies. Atoms within this gas, specifically ionized magnesium (Mg II), absorb certain frequencies of light, leaving tell-tale absorption lines in the quasar's spectrum. By mapping these absorption lines, the team could trace the location of matter across billions of light-years, revealing the immense, curving filament of the Giant Arc.
A challenge to the standard model
The existence of the Giant Arc challenges the Cosmological Principle. This is a concept in modern cosmology which states that, when viewed on a large enough scale, the universe is homogeneous and isotropic—it is uniform and looks the same in all directions. Based on this principle, current cosmological models predict a theoretical size limit for cosmic structures of about 1.2 billion light-years.
At 3.3 billion light-years in length, the Giant Arc is nearly three times larger than this theoretical maximum. Statistical analyses performed by the discovery team suggest that the probability of such a structure forming by random chance is less than 0.0003%. The Giant Arc is not an isolated case. It joins a growing list of ultra-large structures that appear to violate the 1.2 billion light-year limit, including the Sloan Great Wall, the Huge-LQG (Large Quasar Group), and the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall. The Giant Arc is in the same cosmological neighborhood as another massive structure discovered by Lopez, the Big Ring, located just 12 degrees away in the sky as seen from Earth. The proximity of these two enormous structures further strains our current understanding of how the universe evolved.
