A universal alphabet
In 1886, a group of language teachers formed an association with a clear goal: to create a single, universal alphabet that could accurately represent the sounds of any language. This effort produced the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The core principle of the IPA is a direct one-to-one relationship between a sound and a symbol. This system avoids the ambiguities of conventional spelling, where a single letter like 'a' can represent multiple sounds, and a single sound can be written in different ways, such as the 'f' sound in 'fish', 'phone', and 'enough'.
The IPA chart is a tool for documenting human speech. The current version contains 107 letters for consonants and vowels, 31 diacritics for modifying sounds, and 17 symbols for qualities like tone, stress, and length.. The alphabet is not static; it is updated by the International Phonetic Association as new sounds are described by linguists. One of the more recent additions came in 2005 with a symbol for the labiodental flap (ⱱ), a sound found in some languages of Central Africa.
Geneva's linguistic foundations
While the International Phonetic Association was founded in Paris, Geneva is significant to the history of linguistics. The University of Geneva became an intellectual center for the new science of language, especially through the work of Ferdinand de Saussure. Saussure taught at the university from 1891 until 1913. His lectures, compiled by students and published after his death as the Course in General Linguistics, established many principles of modern linguistics and semiotics.
Saussure proposed that language is a system of signs, and that the link between the signifier (a word's sound-image) and the signified (the concept it represents) is arbitrary. This focus on the underlying structure of language, a system he called langue, shifted linguistics away from purely historical studies. This structuralist approach complements the work of phoneticians. By breaking language down to its component sounds, the IPA allows for the systematic analysis that Saussure championed. The University of Geneva continues this work, with research groups in its linguistics department investigating language acquisition, computational linguistics, and the neuro-cognitive processes behind speech.
