A Community Shaped by Craft
In the Traisen Valley of Lower Austria, a series of large-scale rescue excavations that began in 1981 uncovered one of Central Europe's most significant Early Bronze Age sites. The Franzhausen I and II cemeteries contain over 2,200 burials dating from approximately 2300 to 1600 BCE. These individuals belonged to the Únětice culture, a society that marked the first widespread adoption of bronze metallurgy in the region. The sheer number of graves points to large, stable communities living in the area for centuries.
The people of Franzhausen practiced a specific and consistent burial rite. The deceased were placed in a flexed, or crouched, position. Men were laid on their left side with their heads pointing north, while women were placed on their right side, heads to the south. This gendered positioning was applied even to infants. Grave goods included ceramic vessels, bronze daggers, axes, and personal ornaments, which suggest a stratified social structure. The excavation of the Franzhausen I cemetery alone yielded 716 Early Bronze Age burials, providing a vast dataset for anthropological study.
The Toll of Specialization
Analysis of the skeletal remains from Franzhausen shows the physical lives of Bronze Age people. A portion of the population, predominantly male, shows distinct patterns of skeletal changes known as musculoskeletal stress markers (MSM). These are not injuries from a single event, but rather the cumulative effect of repetitive physical activity over a long period. The markers appear as robust muscle attachment sites, particularly on the bones of the shoulder, arm, and hand.
These specific patterns of wear are consistent with the motions required for early metalworking—hammering, grinding, and polishing bronze. The repetitive strain led to conditions like osteoarthritis in certain joints, changes that are visible on the bones 4,000 years later. This evidence from Franzhausen is among the earliest and clearest indications of craft specialization in the archaeological record. The skeletons of these metalworkers carry the signature of their trade, documenting the physical cost of their labor. They represent what can be considered the first documented cases of occupational or "industrial" disease.
