The Case for a Modern Origin
The mystery of the skull's origin began to unravel through detailed scientific analysis. In a joint study, researchers from the British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution used advanced techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to examine the skull's surface. This close inspection revealed microscopic marks, particularly around the teeth and eye sockets, that were consistent with the use of a 19th-century jeweler's wheel. These rotary tools, unavailable to pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures, provided clear evidence of modern European manufacturing. The analysis also identified traces of harsh abrasives like corundum or diamond.
Historical research traced the skull's path to the museum. The British Museum purchased the object from Tiffany & Co. in 1897. Tiffany's had acquired it a decade earlier at an auction of items from the collection of Eugène Boban, a French antiquarian. Boban was the official archaeologist to the court of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and a prolific dealer in pre-Columbian artifacts, but his reputation was controversial. It is now widely believed that the skull was manufactured in Europe, quite possibly in Germany, during the late 19th century to cater to a booming market for "exotic" ancient curiosities. No crystal skull has ever been recovered from a documented archaeological excavation. Today, the museum labels the skull as "probably European, 19th century".
