The textbook story
For most of the 20th century, the story of the first Americans was simple. Around 13,500 years ago, big-game hunters crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia into Alaska. They moved south through an ice-free corridor and, within a few centuries, their descendants populated two continents. This theory, known as "Clovis First," was based on discoveries made starting in 1929 at Blackwater Draw near Clovis, New Mexico. Archaeologists unearthed distinctive stone spearheads, now called Clovis points, directly associated with the bones of mammoths and other extinct Ice Age megafauna.
These points are advanced stone tool technology. Typically around 10 centimeters long, they are lance-shaped with a characteristic channel, or "flute," removed from the base. This flute likely helped in attaching the point to a spear shaft. Radiocarbon dating consistently placed Clovis sites between about 13,400 and 12,700 years ago. For decades, no credible evidence of an earlier human presence was found, and the Clovis First model became scientific law. Any potential older sites were scrutinized and usually dismissed.
A crumbling consensus
The first major crack in the Clovis wall appeared thousands of miles south, at Monte Verde in Chile. Excavations revealed a settlement with preserved wooden tent stakes, hearths, and even a child's footprint, all dated to at least 14,500 years ago—a full millennium before the Clovis people appeared in New Mexico. Some evidence at the site suggests human activity as far back as 18,500 years ago. The excellent preservation in a peat bog provided undeniable proof that humans were in southern South America far too early to be descendants of the Clovis hunters.
More evidence surfaced closer to the Clovis heartland. At the Debra L. Friedkin site in Texas, archaeologists discovered more than 15,000 stone artifacts buried in a soil layer directly beneath a layer containing Clovis tools. Using a technique called optically stimulated luminescence, which dates the last time sediment was exposed to sunlight, researchers dated these tools to between 13,200 and 15,500 years old.
The most dramatic discovery came from White Sands National Park, also in New Mexico. Here, fossilized human footprints are preserved in the sediments of an ancient lakebed. Radiocarbon dating of aquatic grass seeds found within the footprint layers places humans at this location between 21,000 and 23,000 years ago. This finding pushes back the timeline for human presence in the Americas by 10,000 years and occurs during the height of the Last Glacial Maximum, when massive ice sheets would have made overland travel from Siberia exceptionally difficult.
New routes and deeper histories
With the Clovis First model no longer supported, researchers are exploring alternative migration theories. One leading idea is the "Kelp Highway" hypothesis. This model proposes that early peoples, skilled in using boats, migrated down the Pacific coast from Asia. They could have sustained themselves on the rich marine resources found in coastal kelp forests, allowing them to bypass the continental ice sheets entirely and spread rapidly down the coast to South America.
Genetic evidence also adds detail to the story. The "Beringian Standstill" hypothesis suggests that the ancestors of Native Americans separated from Asian populations but remained isolated in the region of the Bering Land Bridge for several thousand years. This pause, perhaps lasting from 23,000 to 15,000 years ago, allowed for unique genetic markers to develop before groups began to move south into the Americas. The old story is gone, replaced by a more complex and much deeper human history in the Americas.
