A line in the sand
In the dry arroyos of southern Arizona, a distinct geological feature marks a dramatic moment in Earth's history. At the Murray Springs archaeological site, the soil stratigraphy reveals a story. Below a specific dark line, the dirt contains the bones of Ice Age megafauna—Columbian mammoths, ancient bison, horses, and camels—alongside the stone tools of the Clovis people who hunted them. Directly above this Pleistocene-era surface lies a thin, dark band known as the "black mat." This layer, just a few centimeters thick, is composed of organic clay, thought to be the result of an ancient algal bloom. It dates precisely to the beginning of the Younger Dryas, a period of abrupt and intense cooling that started around 12,800 years ago.
Above the black mat, the story changes completely. The remains of mammoths and other large game animals disappear from the geological record. The distinctive, fluted projectile points and other tools of the Clovis culture are also gone. This sudden vanishing act, preserved in the earth, makes Murray Springs an important location for understanding the widespread extinction event that reshaped North America at the end of the Pleistocene epoch. The black mat itself is a line, separating the world of the Clovis hunters from the world that came after.
Evidence of a cosmic catastrophe
The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis proposes that this abrupt change was caused by a cosmic event. Proponents argue that one or more large airbursts from a fragmented comet occurred over North America. The resulting shockwaves and continent-spanning wildfires would have triggered the sudden climate shift and contributed to the collapse of both megafaunal populations and the Clovis technocomplex.
Scientists have studied the black mat at Murray Springs and other sites for evidence. Proponents of the hypothesis report finding materials consistent with an extraterrestrial impact directly beneath or within the mat. These include microscopic magnetic spherules, elevated levels of iridium, and nanodiamonds, including a hexagonal form called lonsdaleite, which is formed under conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. Recently, researchers have identified shocked quartz grains at the site, which show microscopic fractures indicative of a high-energy impact. While the hypothesis remains a subject of active scientific debate, with some studies failing to replicate the findings, the evidence at Murray Springs continues to fuel the discussion. The site was a Clovis hunting camp before the event, with excavations revealing the butchered remains of at least two mammoths and eleven bison.
