The ancient Douglas firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii) of Cathedral Grove are large trees and centuries-old data repositories. The science of dendrochronology uses the annual growth rings of trees to reconstruct past environmental conditions with yearly precision. The width of each ring provides a record of the climate. Wider rings typically indicate favorable growing seasons with adequate moisture and temperature, while narrow rings suggest periods of stress such as drought. In the Pacific Northwest, these tree-ring chronologies allow scientists to build a detailed climate history stretching back long before instrumental records began.
Fire scars, visible as dark, damaged sections within the ring patterns, provide a precise timeline of past wildfires. Researchers have found that many of the younger trees in the grove, around 350 years old, likely began growing after a major fire cleared the area. The oldest trees, some over 800 years old, are survivors of that and earlier events. These living archives hold data on long-term climate cycles, sudden droughts, and the frequency of natural disturbances that have shaped this forest for nearly a millennium.
An ecosystem of giants
Cathedral Grove, a 301-hectare section of MacMillan Provincial Park, is a remnant of the old-growth Coastal Western Hemlock Biogeoclimatic Zone. Highway 4 divides the park into two distinct sections. The south side contains the largest Douglas firs, including one individual measuring over 9 meters in circumference. The north side, closer to Cameron Lake, is dominated by groves of ancient Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), a species that thrives in wetter conditions.
This ecosystem is a complex web of life. The massive canopy creates a cool, moist understory where ferns, mosses, and shade-tolerant shrubs flourish. Fallen giants, known as nurse logs, are nurseries for new seedlings, providing moisture and a slow release of nutrients as they decay. This process of decay and regeneration is continuous. A powerful windstorm on New Year's Day in 1997 toppled hundreds of trees, dramatically altering the landscape. While sections of trail were destroyed, the event opened the canopy, allowing light to reach the forest floor and initiating a new cycle of growth, showing the dynamic nature of this ancient ecosystem. The park land, originally stewarded by First Nations including the K'ómoks and Tseshaht, was donated by forester H.R. MacMillan in 1944 and formally established as a park in 1947.
