A cave beneath a glacier
Castleguard Cave is a solutional cave system located in a remote section of Banff National Park. With over 21.3 kilometers of surveyed passages, it is the longest known cave in Canada. The cave's single entrance lies in Castleguard Meadows, but its passages extend deep beneath Castleguard Mountain and terminate directly under the vast Columbia Icefield. This makes it the only known cave in the world that passes underneath a major icefield.
The cave is primarily formed within the Middle Cambrian limestone of the Cathedral Formation. Its passages were created by glacial meltwater dissolving the rock over immense timescales; some research suggests the cave began forming as early as 1.25 million years ago. Many of the explored passages end abruptly at "ice plugs," where the immense weight of the overlying glacier has pushed ice down into the cave itself, blocking further progress. These ice plugs are remarkably stable, showing changes of only a few centimeters over decades. The cave's internal air temperature hovers around 2°C year-round.
Exploration is extremely hazardous. The entrance is prone to unpredictable flooding from glacial melt during the summer. For safety, expeditions are restricted to the winter, requiring teams to ski approximately 20 kilometers through remote wilderness to reach the entrance, or arrive by helicopter. A typical expedition to the far reaches of the cave can take four or five days underground.
A record of ancient life
Deep within the cave's darkness, scientists have found a remarkable biological and climatic record. The cave hosts a unique species of amphipod, Stygobromus canadensis, a small, blind, unpigmented freshwater crustacean found nowhere else on Earth. This organism is considered a glacial relict, meaning it likely survived periods of glaciation by taking refuge in the stable, sub-glacial environment of the cave. In 2023, the cave was designated an important Biodiversity Area because of this unique inhabitant. The cave also contains one of only five known examples in the world of rare, nearly cubical cave pearls.
The most significant scientific discoveries come from ancient packrat middens. Packrats, genus Neotoma, build nests from plant debris, bones, and other materials, which become cemented over thousands of years by their crystallized urine, also known as "amberat". These middens perfectly preserve organic material, recording the local environment at the time of their creation.
The middens in Castleguard Cave are a detailed paleoecological record extending back at least 10,000 years. By analyzing the preserved pollen, seeds, and plant fragments, researchers can reconstruct the ancient climate of the Rocky Mountains. This data reveals shifts in vegetation and temperature since the last ice age, showing how the local ecosystem responded as the glaciers retreated.
