An invisible ocean river
The waters around Bunaken National Park contain a powerful secret: a segment of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), one of the planet's most important ocean currents. The ITF acts as a low-latitude pathway, moving vast quantities of water from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. This global conveyor belt is immense, with an average of 15 million cubic meters of water flowing through it every second—a volume measured as 15 Sverdrups (Sv). The flow is driven by a sea-level difference between the two massive oceans, creating a pressure gradient that funnels water through the complex passages of the Indonesian archipelago.
The topography of Bunaken is uniquely suited to channel this flow. Unlike many coastal areas, North Sulawesi lacks a continental shelf. This means the seabed drops away almost immediately, forming sheer vertical walls that in some places plunge to depths of 1,840 meters. These deep channels, such as the 1,200-meter-deep trench separating Bunaken from the mainland, act like canyons for the ITF, concentrating its energy and creating a superhighway for marine life. The currents sweep past the islands, bringing a constant supply of larvae and nutrients from the deep ocean.
A cascade of life
The constant, powerful currents are the engine for Bunaken’s extreme biodiversity. The flow causes upwellings of cold, nutrient-rich water that would otherwise remain in the deep ocean. This influx of plankton and other nutrients fuels a complex food web, starting with the corals themselves. The park has approximately 390 species of coral, which form the foundation of the ecosystem.
This rich coral environment supports a staggering variety of other marine life. Surveys have documented over 2,000 species of fish within the park. The walls are covered in 13 different coral genera and have huge green sea turtles, blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and eagle rays. The constant current ensures the water visibility often exceeds 30 meters, creating ideal conditions for this concentration of life to thrive. Seven of the world's eight giant clam species can be found here, along with 33 species of butterflyfish. The deep waters and migratory pathways also attract larger animals, including sperm whales, pilot whales, and large pods of spinner dolphins.
