A basin built by stretching
The Bohai Sea is the surface expression of a vast geological depression, the Bohai Bay Basin, that has been sinking for 50 million years. This process began in the Cenozoic Era when the Earth's crust in this region began to stretch and thin. The basin's formation results from large-scale tectonic forces, including the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian continent. This stretching created a "rift basin," a type of valley formed as tectonic plates pull apart. However, the process stopped short of creating a new ocean, classifying it as a failed rift.
The basin's architecture is a complex arrangement of horsts (uplifted blocks) and grabens (down-dropped blocks), shaped by extensive faulting. An important factor is the Tan-Lu Fault Zone, a massive, ancient strike-slip fault system that extends for over 2,400 kilometers and forms part of the basin's boundary. The movement along this and other faults, combined with the crustal extension, guided the basin's subsidence. During the most intense period of rifting in the Paleogene, the crust thinned considerably, and upwelling of hot mantle material from below contributed to the subsidence.
The 10-kilometer sediment trap
As the basin floor dropped, it created the perfect trap for sediment. For millions of years, major rivers—including the Yellow River (Huang He), but also the Liao and Hai rivers—have poured vast quantities of silt, sand, and clay into this slowly sinking depression. The Yellow River, historically one of the most sediment-laden rivers in the world, was a primary contributor, at times depositing over a billion tons of sediment per year into the sea.
This relentless deposition, combined with continuous tectonic subsidence, has filled the basin with an immense sequence of sediments. Seismic surveys reveal that in some parts of the basin, the Cenozoic sedimentary layers reach a thickness of up to 10 kilometers. The weight of these accumulating sediments adds to the subsidence in a process called isostatic loading. The combination of tectonic stretching and sediment weight has driven the basin ever downward. These thick layers of sediment, containing organic matter, have been transformed by heat and pressure into some of China's most significant offshore oil and gas reserves, located within formations like the Neogene-age Minghuazhen and Guantao formations.
