A shocking discovery
In August 1998, two amateur archaeologists discovered decorated gold-sheet ornaments near the village of Bernstorf, about 40 kilometers north of Munich. The find occurred in a disturbed area where trees had been cleared for gravel extraction. This location was already known as the site of a major Bronze Age fortification. With an area of nearly 13 hectares, the Bernstorf settlement is the largest known Middle Bronze Age fortification north of the Alps. Radiocarbon dating of timbers from its ramparts suggests a construction date around 1340 BC. The gold items, which included a diadem-like crown, were initially hailed as sensational proof of direct contact between Mycenaean Greece and Central Europe during the Bronze Age. The discovery was added to in 2000 with the finding of amber pieces, some seemingly inscribed with Linear B, the writing system of Mycenaean Greek.
The gold itself was impressive. The collection of thin gold sheet items suggested ceremonial equipment, perhaps for a cult statue or for mortuary purposes. Early interpretations linked the gold's origin to Egypt, suggesting it was part of a long-distance trade network that brought raw materials from the Mediterranean to Bavaria. The amber finds were thought to corroborate the existence of an ancient "amber road" connecting northern Europe with the powerful civilizations of the south. The supposed Linear B script on the amber objects seemed to be the definitive link. For a time, it appeared Bernstorf was a major political or religious center with far-reaching connections.
A scientific investigation
Almost immediately, the authenticity of the finds came under intense debate. The first scientific analyses in 1999 revealed an unusually high purity for the gold, which raised questions. Later, more precise analyses conducted in 2014 determined the gold was 99.99% pure. This level of purity is not found in natural gold and is exceptionally rare in any prehistoric artifacts analyzed to date. Ancient gold refining processes like cementation could not achieve such low levels of copper, which ranged from 0.0001 to 0.0008% in the Bernstorf gold. This composition is, however, consistent with modern gold refined through electrolysis.
Further scientific scrutiny produced more evidence against the artifacts' authenticity. Radiocarbon dating of organic material found with an amber "seal" returned modern dates. Microscopic analysis of the gold foils revealed manufacturing marks inconsistent with Bronze Age tools and techniques. Instead, the marks suggested the use of modern rolling equipment. This has led many researchers, particularly archaeometallurgists and chemists, to conclude the objects are modern forgeries. Professor Ernst Pernicka of the Curt-Engelhorn-Center of Archaeology has been a prominent voice arguing the finds are fake, while Professor Rupert Gebhard of the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection maintains they are genuine. The debate shows a conflict between archaeological interpretation and materials science, leaving the story of the Bernstorf gold a contentious part of German archaeology.
